Leaking RV Roof & Water Damage
How to Detect Hidden Roof Water Damage
Beyond stained or sagging ceiling panels, look for these subtle indicators of concealed roof moisture:
- Rusted Fasteners: Remove interior light fixture covers or 14x14 roof vent interior trim bezels. Remove holding screws—if screw shanks are heavily rusted or corroded from the inside out, water is actively leaking into the roof cavity.
- Spongy Roof Decking: When walking carefully on the roof, soft or springy spots underfoot indicate rotted OSB/plywood decking beneath the membrane.
RV Roof Construction Types & Repair Complexity
The repair method depends heavily on how your RV roof was manufactured:
- Framed "Stick & Staple" Construction: Built like a traditional house with wood or aluminum roof trusses, fiberglass batt insulation, interior ceiling paneling, and an exterior membrane. Small localized rot areas can sometimes be repaired from inside by cutting out damaged wood and replacing ceiling sections.
- Laminated "Pinch-Bonded" Construction: A vacuum-bonded sandwich consisting of interior paneling, rigid EPS foam insulation, and outer fiberglass/aluminum skins glued under immense pressure into a single structural panel. Water intrusion causes delamination across entire sections, often requiring roof removal or complete structural rebuilding.
