RV Hitch Weight Rating vs. Vehicle Capacity

If the stamped weight rating on your tow vehicle's receiver hitch reads 10,000 lbs, that is NOT automatically how much your vehicle can safely tow. That number specifies only the structural limit for the steel receiver assembly itself—it does not increase the underlying chassis or axle capacities.

The Weak-Link Rule

Any safe weight rating assigned to a towing system is governed by the lowest-rated component in the entire setup:

$$\text{Max Tow Capacity} = \min(\text{Vehicle Tow Rating}, \text{Hitch Receiver}, \text{Ball Mount}, \text{Hitch Ball})$$

Examples:

Always inspect the rating tags on your receiver frame, drawbar, drop hitch, and hitch ball before hooking up!
