RV Water Heater Anode Rod
An anode rod protects steel RV water heater tanks from corrosion by sacrificing itself. Inspect yearly and replace as needed.
Note: Aluminum tanks often feature special coatings and typically do not require an anode rod.
Suburban tanks use a magnesium anode, while Atwood tanks are generally designed without one due to special linings. Mixing metal types (e.g., adding an anode to an aluminum tank) can cause issues with component removal, leading to manufacturer recommendations against it.
Regular maintenance is recommended: Flush the tank every few months to remove sediment, minerals, and to eliminate the "rotten egg" odor caused by hydrogen sulfide, ensuring better efficiency.
