time distance calculator

for checking your speedo meter,

http://www.gazza.co.nz/distance.html

find a level course i would recommend 10 miles (use the yardsticks along the side of the road) run at 60 then at 65 over the course, use a stopwatch and start it at the stick as you go by at whatever speed you plan to check, stop it whenever you reach a point you think is adequate. go to the website and convert time and distance to get you actual speed.

using the roadside yard sticks will also give you indications as to the accuracy of the odometer if you take note of the indicated milage when you start and finish and compare to the milage markers you were using for distance traveled. granted these are not exact but they will be close enough for comparison purposes.

I just use my Garmin GPS unit. It tells me ground speed, works great and I don't have to do any cipherin'. ;-)

Russ thats true, we have a big fancy one that they use at work, I put in the truck one day and it did confirm what I had found out and it did confirm the numbers I got off the site after doing this test.

Much cheaper than buying something that I dont need!

Definitely! I already had the GPS unit when I found out it did speed - I sure wouldn't buy it just for that. But if you have one, it will do the job.

My Chevy truck's speedo reads 5 mph over, so if it says 60 I'm really doing 55. Weird. Wish it was in reverse, because it's probably racking up more miles on the odometer than it's really travelling.

Interesting thing about these little GPS units or at least the one I have. :) It not only records actual MPH (my Honda wagon speedometer is 3 MPH faster then actual) but it records max MPH, total distance travel and a couple of other items that don't interest me. What I want to do with it now is tie it into my lap top with my Delorme program for travel instructions. :) But with the lap top, I need 115VAC so bought a inverter but just haven't figured out how to mount the whole system into my motor home. Need to do a little bit of "Rube Goldberg" engineering for that.
