R/V Electrical Problem

I have a 2000 Komfort travel trailer with a 30 amp electrical system that is plugged into a 20 amp gfi protected circuit in my shop when ever based at home.Recently it is tripping the gfi. I have checked the cord feeding the rv, all recepticals inside & out of the rv for grounds, polarity, ect, & all check ok. I have turned off the 30 amp maine breaker in the rv & all the 20 amp circuits in the rv & it still trips the gfi in the shop. The gfi in the rv does not trip & every thing in the rv works ok. Also all workd ok when plugged into a none gfi circuit. Whats going on? Is it safe to use it as it is?

could be you have a bad gfi that you are working off. These fail fairly often, I know I have 2 that need to be replaced. A slight possibility is that breaker is also weak.

Try to run a compressor or something off the plug in and see what happens.

Is the GFI in the basement on a dedicated line? If not you might have plugged something in another outlet that's using the same GFI. In many instances, additional outlets can be wired through a single GFI. Typically you find that in Bathrooms and Kitchens.

You can also have a bad power cord. Somehow the insulation might have gotten damaged and allowed moisture into the cord. Rodents love chewing insulation. Check the cord and check the TT too, no telling where it might pop up.

If you need to replace the actual GFI, make sure to get a brand name one! Places like K-Mart, Wal*Mart and such, sell Chinese Crap.

well if you turned off the 30 amp main in front of the converter? then I would think the only wires left in the camper would be the wire from the outlet on the outside wall of the camper to the main brkr.(or converter) I would try what Hank said find something that pulls at least 15 amps on that GFI and if it does not kick the GFI? I would be checking into that wire and outlet on the camper and or the cord or plug ends of that cord.
if the GFI turns out to be good? if you would happen to have a volt meeter? you could try a continuity check on the cord looking for a continuity reading from the line spade of the plug to the neutral spade and the ground spade, it should not pick up any reading.

You should also check the 20 to 30 amp adapter for any continuity between its connections.

Another possibility would be if the RV has a Marinco type power cord attachment. Check the wire connections on the socket.
