1996 southwind fleetwood, opinions?

Postby tj15j » Wed Aug 11, 2010 12:39 pm

I'm looking at a 96 southwind by fleetwood It has the 230 hp diesel with an Allison 6 speed. It shows around 55k on miles. It needs a little tlc but nothing major. Is there anything I should be cautious about? And how does the motor and trans do towing? I think I can get it bought for around $10,000. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks,Tim

As you may know, Fleetwood is no longer in business. Never owned a Fleetwood product but from all I've read, they had spotty reputation for qlty.

With Fleetwood being out of business, any replacement parts you need that are unique to the product is going to be difficult to find. Most appliance and such are common to all brands and are not going to be an issue for repairs/replacement.

IMO, engine and trans shouldn't be an issue but at 230HP, you could find yourself a little short on power especially when towing if you find yourself in the mountains.

Sure there will be others offering their comment and likely have more personal experience than I have with this mfgr.

I didn't know Allison made the 6 speed in 96. If it indeed has that transmission it is a very sturdy one.
I have a 4 speed in my 94 and I would have liked a 6 speed.
You can't have too much power or too many speeds.
