Newbie questions

Postby CoriGr » Wed Aug 12, 2009 5:53 pm

i just got a 1989 Mallard Sprinter 24ft motor home. There are 2 spots where the exterior siding has pulled out of the "corner moulding" one at base of the cabover sleeper where the wall meets the base in a L shaped channel. and the same thing on the back corner at the base of the rv where there had been a bit of water dammage (repaired). My thoughts had been to pull the edges back where they should be with the use of a come-along and then use liquid nails and screws to secure the channel back over the siding. But, I don't want to look like the Beverly hillbillys and know that there has to be a more professional "fix" Any suggestions. thanks, Cori

Howdy and welcome.

Usually, separation at the seams indicates structural problems - specifically in your case, rotten wood inside.

The aluminum corner molding is usually attached to wood framing inside the trailer by screws. When the wood rots, the screws have nothing to hold them in place, so the molding goes wherever it wants to.

The proper fix for that situation is to remove the molding and carefully peel back the siding enough to determine the extent of the damage and replace all the rotten wood - then reassemble it all and seal it up properly.
