Extended Warranties

Postby logan » Mon Sep 01, 2008 1:25 am

We just purchased a new RV and are considering purchasing an extended warranty. Are the extendedwarranties worth it? I hear people think they are great but no of them have needed to use it. Others say it is a rip off, that one needed a new refrigerator, the refrig was replaced but they had to pay shipping. We had one with the Coachman and felt secure about anything going wrong. Now I wonder if I had a false sense of security.
Please give me your experinces abd thoughts.
Thanks
Logan

Logan: They're only good if you need them. Most postings I've read on this subject, folks say no, take that money and put it into a savings account to be used if needed in the future.

Here's a point to consider beside checking the small print to what IS NOT covered. Example: I bought a new M/H in July 05. Put a 5 year warrenty on the unit BUT, the new unit already had a 2 year warrenty on most everything, so I lost the first two years. Therefore, for the price of a 5 year warrenty, I only get 3 years coverage. I will also say this, I did use the warrenty on the Micro Wave/Convection oven but I question my mentality for getting it in the first place.

Extended Warranties

Logan- who is offering the ext. warranty? - is it a factory or some private company ext. warr.? - car dealers offer this but when you get the paper work some are an aftermarket or private company and I have heard of some big scams where people do not get the car repaired properly- now you add a house on the back and with an private company this can open a can of worms- how do they calculate the warranty times? - do they use a flat rate manual or do they give the repair center straight time (paying for the entire repair regardless how long it takes)? - as anyone who repairs RV's can tell you a lot of the factory warranty time for repairing an RV just isn't enough and does not compensate the repair center for the actual time it takes to do the repair properly- yes you will have a deductable but if the shop is going into overtime and will not get paid for this then I guarantee you they will take shortcuts and then the quality of the repair will not be stisfactory- take one example of a shower in a big class A (where the shower door surrounds the shower in a high end coach) where the factory did not assemble the ABS drain pipes correctly and when the shower drains water goes all over the place inside- a complete removal of the shower base was required- took three days to put everything back together and the factory said 10 hours MAX!!- perfect example of a shop loosing money- if a private company will cover this extra time then its worth it especially with an RV but read the fine print first- hope this helps!!-

that sounds like good info Mech Tech
I am a service tech on appliances and am factory authorized with several factories, warr work does not pay much, and at times I will call in and ask more for a job, sometimes they will give a lil bit more and some times they wont  aravage call to do that is 30 min. other extended warr company's I have delt with try and get you to fix what ever the problem is for say under 130 dollars and that includes travel, parts, and labor some parts cost more than that them selves and of course their goes another 30 min phone call.
