Suburban Water heater SW6DE

Postby NMelville » Sun Mar 19, 2006 6:33 am

Greetings,
I have an older 1998 DSI suburban hot water heater that will not stay lit. I took the starter board to be tested, and it passed fine. I took off all the gas tubing, screws, and connections all the way to the electrode and it still lights up fine, then the unit shuts off the gas valve and goes out. This repeats 2 times then the on/off switch can be cycled to repeat process.

Does this sound familiar with failure of any of the specific components?

Thank you for your reply.

Hi Nathan,

Welcome to our discussions! Glad to have you aboard.

Your discription of the problem and the make/model number will certainly help us get to the solution ... thanks for being so precise.

The ignition board would be the first place to look - you have had that tested so that is covered.

The electrode is what I would suspect next. The electrode supplies the spark to light the burner, but also is the sensor that tells the circuit board that the flame is established. Make sure that the electrode is directly in the flame and that it glows red hot when the flame is running. Also make sure that the ground screw that holds the electrode assembly in place is clean of corrotion and tight. If all is okay but the flame still shuts down, replace the electrode assembly.

You can find this part on-line at:

type in part number 42-0623 in the part search box...
