Water heater sealant

Postby Kerri » Wed Mar 15, 2006 5:09 pm

We had to buy a new water heater and now it's time to install it. Are there any recomendations on what type sealer we use around the exterior door after we put the heater in place? Thank you in advance.

The factory uses tape, often butyl, but after a while it shrinks up and starts to leak. I sealed mine with silicone, as I did all other wall penetrations on my trailer.

Use the putty tape on the wall to water heater surface. After you tighten the screws, the putty will squeeze out a bit - trim this off, then apply a bead of silicone to the joint 9smooth it out with a wetted finger)

Double sealed! :D

And give the tape a few days to finish oozing out before the silicone... when I used it on the trim strips after re-roofing my rig, the tape kept oozing out for a day or two. After that I trimmed it with a putty knife and gave it a nice bead of Dicor sealant.
